late in the afternoon,

the cafe windows fade, and

my eyes fall to your hands

i notice the length of your fingers

holding a glass

to the table

as we discuss the roles

fear plays in our lives

and i know you are brave

this i can see

in your face

again my gaze lowers

in modesty, taken

as i am, by your strength

beautiful and gentle

life continues
