Ginger Nuts And Cheese
by M. A. Schaffner
Thirty minutes later and Bartleby
stood by my side smiling. The clerk returns
each day to say I would prefer not to
read my e-mail for the late day requests
sent just as the sender logs off and leaves
with a turnaround time of seven days
wrapped around a three-day weekend. Then
an office into which letters disappear
as in the sea off Bermuda suddenly
awakes to note a typo in a draft.
Neolithic hunters might not like meat
but at least they got to kill, unlike us.
Today the Director’s message extols
our excellence as an organization.
The ghost besides me laughs and shakes his head.
Call it what you want. I know where I am.
