A Glimpse of the Tragic Vision

                                                   by Thomas Zimmerman

How serious it seems: the universe

so multiform, a zillion-petaled bloom

of clashing forces, ocean to immerse

and drown each spark of thought, enormous room

with furniture too big to reach to sit

and rest upon. So we assert ourselves:

heroic anagnorises will knit

our strands of fate. Some books upon our shelves

affirm it. Goat-song. Tragedy. To live’s

to suffer. And to die. The art we make

portraying this ennobles us and gives

us bittersweet release. Rebirth. Just take

Osiris, Dionysus, Christ: the grief

of death and joy of life beget belief.
