Anthem

by Ottilie Mulzet

I listen to the anthem of the dead

while riding through the ruined city

where the sunlight writes on an old façade

its mournful history

and just one scrap of paper found

in the rotting pile should be enough

to tell you that they too, they too

lived here, my ancestors

who were not my ancestors, who knows

if they ever met or even said

hello or even if they looked at each other

next to the burning funeral pyre

Secret Code

by Ottilie Mulzet

I wrote my diary in secret code

and entrusted it to the mice

who transported it through secret tunnels

all the way to Mongolia

from where, if correctly deciphered, my

rescuers would come

I watched for their arrival

over the top of the pink clouds

where I imagined the caravan was just now starting out

where the continents stretched away to infinity

camels and horses and palace-yurts on wheels

but I never knew that the mice had all drowned at sea
