Old Friends

by Jennifer C. Wolfe

Old friends are the ocean at morning tide,

The smell of fresh morning coffee,

Tastes from a favorite scoop of ice cream,

An unexpected rebate check,

Midnight phone calls announcing joy or tragedy,

Laughter floating on the summer wind,

Shoulders wrung wet with tears,

Reassurance that clothing purchases are complimentary,

And favorite sports teams are invincible,

Carefree sunsets soothing with soft pink horizons.

New Friends

by Jennifer C. Wolfe

New friends are a freshly opened box of crayons,

Textures of grape and cherry popsicles,

Drawing pencils poised atop paper tablets,

Outstretched microphones on karaoke night,

Fragrances of mouthwatering meals,

The needle placed upon the record,

Expanding ripples in a quiet lake,

Fresh viewpoints and unexpected conclusions,

Opening minds to new possibilities,

Golden sunrises dazzling with uncharted promise.
