My baby son--1976

by Dr. Yearn Hong Choi

Under an apple tree

A dreamy child sleeps.

Sunlight simmers through

The apple tree blossoms in a subtle way

To avoid waking the child up

Quiet wind

Carries the mother’s lullaby

From the seashore and lingers.

From a river village

by Dr. Yearn Hong Choi

in the 1960s

Came thousand miles with the spring wind

To this modernized rural village.

The shimmering sun rays on the surface

Of the river mystified it.

Fishermen and ducks live on the river,

The farmers live on the river banks.

The maidens live in the conservatories.

I want to catch a duck,

But the duck, like a maiden, moved away

To the centre of the river,

As if it was not moving at all.
